Meeting of the workgroup "EU Platform Economy: DSA Workshop" - policy makers.

Here is my takeaway from this insightful workgroup discussion with European SMEs, NGOs, consultants and European policy makers:
➡️ Not only to support large platforms but also to give SMEs a fair chance to build a sustainable and profitable business.
➡️ We need smart regulations. Protecting users online but without banning new ideas and new services and modern technology.
➡️ Keep the costs of the DSA regulations practical for SMEs, startups, and scaleups.
➡️ Don't kill innovation!
Let's keep in our mind: ➡️ Besides Europe, there is also global competition.
Key statements of selected speakers:
⏺️ Henna Virkkunen, MEP European Parliament, speaking at the
What is "in" in the new DSA? Regulatory systems for online platforms, online advertising.
⏺️ Fredrik Erixon, Director at ECIPE: Is Europe a little bit too keen on regulation? Talking about the gap between Europe and the global frontier, especially in the area of B2B and systemic risk monitoring. The DSA regulation by creating thresholds adds a new layer of costs to SMEs, economically reasonable handling of the risk reduction.
⏺️ Sebastian Schwemer, from a research perspective, speaks about the intermediaries and private regulation of the internet and how to deal with lawful but awful content.
⏺️ Annelise Badinand, Director of European Economic Law, Public Affairs, calls for a more SME-friendly regulatory framework.
She states the DSA needs a practical, more flexible rules framework and should not be burdened with regulations that only large platforms can handle in time and with reasonable costs.
The DSA legislation is designed to build a framework to fight illegal content, but NOT to define what illegal content is.
⏺️ Jouni Lounasmaa, Startup Foundation is concerned that the DSA will build hurdles for European startups and scaleups. "Playing allowed and growing encouraged - restrictions with a scale."
⏺️ Peter Kofler, Empowering Startups. Do we only ringfence the large platforms that can afford to build the required team to control and execute the DSA? He calls for a Frontrunner Alliance to develop and support a positive environment for digital innovation.
⏺️ Glen Hodgson: do not overburden SMEs and prevent them to grow, which is so important in the current innovation process, also related to AI.
